Dr. Belva Bise Holleman - Passed away peacefully Monday, May 24 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Born October 22, 1928 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania to parents Margaret Gilmor Bise and Delmas Francis Bise. Longtime employee of Knoxville City Schools/Knox County Schools, she served as Elementary Supervisor, Supervisor of Reading, Principal of West Haven Elementary School, and Librarian at Rocky Hill School. Dr. Holleman received her Ed.D. (1979) and M.S. in Library Science (1974) from the University of Tennessee, and her B.S. in Education from the College of St. Francis (1970). She was nationally recognized with the John Cotton Dana Award by the American Library Association and the Louise Meredith Award from the Tennessee Library Association. She is fondly remembered by students at Rocky Hill School for her "Check-A-Pet" program, along with many other creative library programs. Organizational memberships included the American Library Association, Tennessee Library Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Tennessee Education Association, East Tennessee Education Association, International Reading Association, and the Association of School Curriculum Development. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. R. Gordon Holleman, Jr., her parents, and son Guthrie Gilmor Holleman. Survived by daughter, Belva Holleman Jennings (Brendan), Birchwood, TN; and sons, John Marshall (Robie Jackson) Monteagle, TN, and Rutledge Gordon, III (Brenda), Edmond, OK; three grandchildren, and special friends, James and Dayne Frost. A private service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, or The Imagination Library.
