Barbara Colonna (n?e Sarazen) passed away peacefully on January 16th at the age of 86 from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Barbara was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of Anthony and Sylvia Sarazen. She earned her teaching degree at Boston University, where she also met her beloved husband, Jerry, an engineering student at nearby Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Barbara taught primary school in Rhode Island and Florida. Years later, she filled in as a substitute teacher, primarily supporting Old Trail School and the Revere School District, in Bath, Ohio. Proper grammar and spelling were reinforced, at home, with her own children! Barbara enjoyed many volunteer activities at St. Hilary Parish and in her community.
Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, and "Nana," first and foremost. She was selfless, patient, and kind-hearted, always recognizing the good in people. Late in life, her husband confided, "In all our years together, I never heard Barbara say anything bad about another person." This statement beautifully sums up the essence of our mother!
Barbara joins her husband of over 60 years, Gerald "Jerry" Colonna, deceased two years earlier. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Arnold, and stillborn granddaughter, Rose. She leaves behind her children; Gail Colonna, Christine Baker (Joe), Gerald Colonna Jr. (Romelia), Gloria Sprague (Jim); six grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother, Kenneth (Louise); sister, Cynthia Buco (Joe); and sister-in-law, Patricia Sarazen.
Mass of Christian Burial 10am Saturday at St. Hilary Catholic Church in Fairlawn, where friends may call 9:30am until service time.
Barbara will be interred next to her husband at Moore's Chapel Cemetery in Bath, Ohio.
