Barbara Sue Myers Bowman of Alcoa and Townsend died unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep at the hospital from recently diagnosed pulmonary fibrosis. She was affectionately known as Susie and was preceded in death by her parents, Kathryn Douglas Myers and Herbert Myers and sister, Becky Koella. Survivors include beloved son, Mike Akard and loving wife Donna; grandchildren, Jennifer Dawson and Lisa Maas; great grandchildren, Lindsey, Camron, and Trinity Nipper and Thomas and Bryan McClelland; brother, Doug Myers and wife Wenie; nephews, Carl Koella III and wife Beth, Richard Koella and wife Eliza, Kris Myers, Paul Myers, and Warren Asuncion; niece, Abby Koella Hughes and husband, Kevin; aunt, Wilma Douglas; special great nieces and nephews; dear friend and neighbor, Rita Sellers; and many loving cousins and friends. Susie was born on November 14, 1943, in Maryville, moved to a farm in Townsend as a young girl where she learned the value of hard work, graduated from Townsend High School in 1961, graduated as a registered nurse after studying at UT and Ft. Sanders School of Nursing, and worked as an RN for many years at Eastern State Hospital and Peninsula Hospital. Susie had many talents, including baking the world's best peanut butter fudge and chocolate chip cookies (which created lines on more than one college campus when her care packages arrived prompting many questions of "what did Aunt Susie send this time?"); gardening (her hemlock hedges, roses, and irises were especially beautiful), cooking delicious specialties (like fried chicken, country style steak, and amazing soups), and researching important passages in the Bible. Susie was told more than once that Amos never would have been famous, if the world had tried her chocolate chip cookies first! Susie grew up riding horses, hiking all around Cades Cove where her father was born, and loving God's creation of the great outdoors. Susie always had a warm spot in her heart for dogs she rescued and all animals in need. She also enjoyed seeing more of His glorious world, including trips to Hawaii, Australia, Tahiti, and other beautiful locales. Plus, it was a full-time job raising her adventurous son Mike and her stepdaughters Wendy and Melissa, whom she loved as her own. Susie was very patient and had a slow temper, but if you pushed incessantly and unreasonably, watch out! (as a less than honest car dealership learned after being confronted by Susie and a baseball bat.) Susie doted on her family and took especially good care of her mother and her father in their declining years. Susie had a wonderful sense of humor and could tell hilarious stories at will?especially when her 6-year-old son once threatened to run away. More importantly, Susie had a deep and sincere faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and shared His love and wisdom with all those who would listen. She has left the pain of this world to enter into His everlasting Kingdom of Heaven. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation, POB 1099, Alcoa, TN 37701-1099 or to Gideons International, 711 Hall of Fame Dr, Knoxville, TN 37917.
