Barbara R. Lapeyre, 93, a resident of Bastrop, Texas and former resident of Brownsville and San Benito, joined her Lord in heaven on July 28, 2022.
Born Barbara Lee Catherine Routier on June 20, 1929, in Houma, Louisiana, to Louis E. and Corinne W. Routier, she graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in 1946 and College of the Sacred Heart Grand Coteau in 1950. Barbara married Louis F. Lapeyre on August 2, 1950 and the couple moved their family to Brownsville, Texas in 1957. They were blessed with 11 children, and for three decades, she was a teacher at St. Mary's Catholic School.
Barbara is survived by her siblings Joyce McNeely, Corinne Comeaux, and Louis E. Routier, Jr. (Spunky), as well as her children Corinne Nelson and husband Beau, Margo Lapeyre, Suzanne Lovegren and husband James, Louis Lapeyre, Jr., Mary Lapeyre, David Lapeyre and wife Rita, Ann Richburg and husband Rod, Julie Vondrak and husband John, Jane Traver and husband Scott, 32 grandchildren, and 33 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Caroline Pritchard and Annette Charpentier, as well as husband Louis F. Lapeyre, Sr., son Harold Lapeyre, daughter Lorraine (Pete) Penny and husband Ron, and grandson Joey Fischer.
Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend. She loved cooking, creating art with needle and thread, and being in the presence of family and friends. Endowed with a tireless and joyous spirit, she was renowned for her hospitality, generosity, and kindness, as well as her deep devotion to family and her Catholic faith. Barbara was loved by many and will be missed by all who were blessed to have known her.
Visitation begins August 4 at 5:30 pm followed by a 7 pm Rosary inside Funeraria Del Angel Mont Meta Funeral Home. On August 5, a funeral mass, celebrated by Rev. Amador Garza, will take place at 10 am at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in San Benito.
