Barbara Ann (Ford) Hines passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Hospice of Southern Kentucky in Bowling Green. Barbara was born in rural Warren County, KY on October 26, 1934 to James Ford and Bess (Campbell) Ford. Barb grew up next door to Lost River Cave on the Campbell family farm and attended elementary school in Rich Pond and Western Training School. Barbara graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1952 and later that summer traveled alone and sight unseen by train to Columbia, Missouri to attend Stephen's College where she graduated in 1954.
Barbara met the love of her life Kenneth Hines when they were juniors in high school, and they married in September 1954. Kenneth proceeded her in death in August 2019. They were blessed with son Ken and daughter Laura, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Barbara was the glue that held the growing family together as Kenneth began work with the Hartford Insurance Company in 1960 and the family moved six times in 12 years. The last move to Phoenix in 1973 resulted in over a 30 year stay in the Valley of the Sun, countless rounds of golf at Moon Valley Country Club. Barbara worked as an elementary school secretary, first in St. Louis County with the Parkway School District and with the Paradise Valley, Arizona School District. She loved working with the teachers, aides, and especially the children at Sandpiper Elementary School in Phoenix. Barbara and Kenneth were strong supporters of charities in Phoenix such as the Lincoln Health Foundation.
Ken and Barbara retired to Bowling Green in 2003 and reconnected with old high school chums and made new friends. Barbara was unselfish with her time and was proud of her association with the Christ Episcopal Church, Orchestra Kentucky, and Riverview at Hobson Grove. She was a member of P.E.O. in all the places she lived and became a 50-year Sister while a member of Chapter AH in Bowling Green. Barbara was also proud of her friends and association with the Browning Club, the Little Book Club, and the Wednesday Lunch Bunch at Bowling Green Country Club.
Barbara was proud of her Bowling Green roots and Lost River Cave and the Nashville Road were the boundaries of her youth, Stephen's College expanded her world, and her own family made her the mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, churchgoer, Cincinnati Reds fan, and friend everyone knew.
Barb is survived by her son, Ken and wife Margie of Columbia, MO; daughter, Laura Wakefield of Plano, TX; grandchildren, Whitney Hines of Columbia, MO, Samantha (Hines) Batson of Columbia MO, Drew Coco of Columbia, MO, Kyle Wakefield, Lindsey Wakefield, and Sarah Wakefield of Plano, TX; and great-grandchildren Mackenzie Keilholt, Liam Hines, Grace Hines, and Hazel Mae Batson of Columbia, MO. Barb's niece Jennifer (Hines) Steen and husband Mike of Bowling Green provided incredible love and support to her following the loss of Kenneth.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, mother and father, and three siblings who died in infancy. A memorial service will be held later once life gets back to normal and the dang COVID-19 is vanquished. In lieu of flowers, any donations would be most welcome to the Christ Episcopal Church, Riverview at Hobson Grove House, Orchestra Kentucky, and Hospice House of Southern Kentucky. J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapels has been entrusted with arrangements.
