Barbara Sue Hibbs Waddell
Barbara Sue Hibbs was born on November 8, 1941 in Liberal, KS to Lawrence Dell and Grace Ruby Hibbs. She grew up in Panhandle Eastern Natural Gas Pipeline Company camps in the Texas Panhandle near Hardesty, Ok, where she attended New Hope Elementary, then Satanta, KS, for two years, then moved to the Sunray/Dumas area. She graduated from Dumas High School in 1959, then attended West Texas State College in Canyon for a year before transferring to St. Anthony's school of nursing. After graduating from nursing school, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Waddell. She worked at St. Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo until moving to Greeley, CO, with her husband so he could begin work on his Master's Degree in industrial arts. While in Greeley, she worked as an office nurse for an ophthalmologist. After Bill completed his Master's degree, they moved to Carlsbad, NM where she worked in the local hospital recovery room until just before the birth of their first child. They moved to Odessa, TX in the summer of 1966. She was a stay at home wife and mother until she began work at Medical Center Hospital in 1972, then she later worked at Odessa Internal medicine for several years before she began teaching health occupation education at Odessa High School, then transferred to a School Nurse position with ECISD until retiring in 2004. She was a Cub Scout leader and a Girl Scout leader and trainer. She loved to cook, sew, garden, and loved being a rancher's wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband: Bill Waddell; son: James Waddell and wife Angela of Kermit, TX; daughter: Shannon Waddell Lambert and husband of Mark of Andrews, TX; grandchildren: Shelby Waddell Vennes and husband Ross of San Antonio, TX, Jake Waddell and wife Ashleigh of Colorado Springs, CO, Justin Waddell and Brenna Waddell of Odessa, Rebbekah, Brittney, and Deric Lambert and wife Hayden of Andrews, TX; and great-granddaughters: Scarlette Grace, Maya Ann Waddell, and Emmy Paige Lambert; sister: Sandy Douglas of Amarillo; sister-in-law: Linda Hibbs of Dumas, and multiple nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on August 3, 2024 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in Kermit, TX officiated by Bill Waddell assisted by Dudley Mullins. A private burial will be held at the Waddell family cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Jesus House of Odessa or Gentiva Hospice.
