Barbara Gercken died on January 18; she was 79 years old. Barbara was born in Trenton, New Jersey and grew up in Bergenfield. She graduated with a history degree from Douglass College and a Master's in Library Science from Rutgers University. She spent her professional life as a children's librarian, most of it at the Barberton Public Library, where she introduced countless young people to the pleasures of books and reading through her library and school programs. Barbara was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Canton. She was a long-time Girl Scout leader and enjoyed singing with Stark Senior Sing. She was an avid environmentalist. Barbara was an active volunteer at the food pantry in Barberton, The Wilderness Center in Wilmot, Fort Laurens, and St. Joseph Church, but the love and pleasure of Barbara's life was her family. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard; sisters Mary LuePaczkowski (Robert) of Las Vegas, NV and Sheila Thompson (Michael) of Tucson, AZ; son David (Leigh Anne) of Sanford, NC and daughter Becca (Sim?n) of Morris, MN, and 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to thank the medical and nursing staffs of 7 Main, 8 Main, and the ICU of Mercy Medical Center. Memorials may be made to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank of Barberton and the Barberton Public Library. Services have already been held. To leave words of condolences, go to heitger.com.
