Avalou Calavan Hix passed away peacefully at her home in Woodstock, Georgia on August 3, 2021, at the age of 85. She was born March 29, 1936, to Ava May and Louis M. Calavan in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but was raised in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from Wichita High School in Wichita, Kansas. Avalou attended Southern Methodist University and graduated with a Bachelor's in Business Administration in 1957. Avalou married in 1958 and moved to Savannah, Georgia where she taught elementary school and subsequently moved to Atlanta, GA where she spent the next 50 years of her life. Avalou was co-owner of Symmes Music Company in Atlanta from 1962 to 1974. She earned her real estate license in Georgia and sold real estate for 20 years. She attended North Georgia College and received her teaching certificate. Avalou taught for Richmond County Schools and retired from the Atlanta Public School system. Avalou moved to DeLand, Florida in 2013 where she attended church at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand and was active in her community. Avalou moved back to Atlanta in February 2021.
Avalou enjoyed playing and watching tennis. She was active in her church and volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Atlanta and DeLand. She also enjoyed reading and playing bridge.
Avalou is survived by her daughter Joni (Gerry) Frederick, son Robert (Belinda) Symmes, grandson Tyler (Hannah) Smith, granddaughter Savannah (Sam) Mixon, and great-granddaughter Ava Katherine Mixon. Funeral Service on August 21, 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 724 N. Woodland Blvd, Deland, FL 32720
