Atress Wilson Canup Jr, 70, of Mint Hill, died unexpectedly at his home on December 28, 2021.
Atress, or "AC" as he was also known, was born in Mecklenburg County on June 5, 1951, the son of Atress W and Lois Rachael Cochrane Canup Sr. He grew up in the Newell area and graduated from Garinger High School. Atress attended CPCC and obtained his degrees in Sales and Marketing and Business Administration. He went on to work for the City of Charlotte as a Neighborhood Development Coordinator, and specifically helping the residents of the city by doing Lead Paint Inspections to ensure properties were safe. He worked for the city until his retirement in 2006, faithfully giving over 30 years of service to the citizens of Mecklenburg County.
While playing football with friends at the park, a mother across the street got her car stuck in the yard due to the wet conditions. Not wanting to tear up the yard, she had the young boys come over and help her free the car. Little was it known that Atress was one of those young men, and the woman was the mother of Katrin Barber, the love of Atress' life who he went on to marry in 1974. They celebrated 47 years together.
When not working, Atress enjoyed leatherwork and going outdoors where he could hunt, fish and play sports. When not playing, he could even be found umpiring for softball and volleyball games as well as coaching Class A Women's softball and 13-15 year old Girl's Softball in Mint Hill. Most of all, he loved the time spent with family and friends. The last couple of years were very hard for him as COVID limited many of the social events he enjoyed, but he was blessed to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas this year with some of his family before his untimely passing. His wit, laughter and blessing will be both missed and fondly remembered.
In addition to his wife, Katrin, Attress is survived by his daughter, Lois Helms of Stanley, NC; and two grandchildren: Maddison and Jake Helms, also of Stanley. Atress was also very close to his wife's nephew, Zachary Schwarz of Charlotte. He is further survived by numerous other relatives and friends. Atress was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Caroline Canup.
Atress' family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for him and for them. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 11 AM at Charlotte Memorial Gardens.
As the recipient of a kidney transplant, the family would like to honor Atress by asking that instead of flowers, donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, https://www.kidney.org/
