Ascension "Chon" V. Martinez went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 8, 2022, at age 88, after a short battle with cancer. He was born in San Benito, Texas on May 25, 1933 where he remained as a lifelong resident. Chon was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was the owner of Martinez construction and his legacy can be seen throughout the Harlingen community and surrounding areas through his skilled craftsmanship.
Chon enjoyed his retirement working on various projects and always found time to enjoy a good western movie. He was a faithful servant for many years as an Usher at St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito. His pride and joy was evident when he spent time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Ralph Martinez, Susie (Ray) Nieto, Diana Metivier, and Rey Martinez and 10 grandchildren; John David and Elizabeth Corona, Natalie, Ralph Jr., Roxanna, Rey Jr., Christopher and Veronica Martinez, Ian and Annelise Metivier. He also leaves behind 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Chon is also survived by his siblings Raul Martinez and Rosa Martinez.
Chon is preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto and Maria Martinez; his loving wife, Hilaria "Lala" Martinez, daughter, Carmelita; siblings, Dolores Lucio, Guadalupe Reyes, Tomasa Rocha, and Ernesto Martinez Jr.
A Visitation for Chon will be held Friday, March 11, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Mont Meta, 26170 State Highway 345, San Benito, Texas 78586 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will occur Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St Theresa Catholic Church, 1300 Combes St, San Benito, TX. Following the Mass, Chon will be laid to rest at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
