Mr. Arthur "Art" Nichols, Sr., of Pittsfield, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022, shortly after celebrating his 91st birthday. Born in Pittsfield, MA, on June 23, 1931, the son of the late Harry and Alice Pharmer Nichols, he graduated from St. Joseph High School and later earned his bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Science from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston, MA.
Following graduation, Art proudly served his country as a pharmacist at both West Point, NY and the Pentagon in Washington DC, in the United States Army.
Art was the proud owner of Nichols Pharmacy in Pittsfield, where he served his community for nearly 50 years until his retirement. He was known not only for his service, but also his kindness and dedication to each and every one of his customers.
Art loved being a part of nature, whether he was out in his garden, cross country skiing, fishing for trout, or admiring the wildlife on Thomas Island. He was a master craftsman, whose home was filled with Shaker-reproduction furniture that he so beautifully made.
Art was a beloved member of the Berkshire Nautilus, where his friends enjoyed his company just as much as he did theirs! Additionally, for many years he served on the board for Pittsfield Cooperative Bank.
Perhaps, however, most important was Art's genuine love of, and zest for life, which was reflected in each and every part of his day.
Art was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, the former Eileen "Pat" Mehos, whom he married at Sacred Heart Church in 1953. He is survived by his sons, Arthur J. Nichols, Jr., (Corinne), Joseph C. Nichols (Nancy), and Shaun J Nichols, as well as his three daughters, Maris Nichols, Maureen A. Nichols, and Marie A. Nichols. Art leaves behind his four granddaughters, Maya Kraushaar, Kristal Nichols, and Alaura "Paige" and Kiliegh McGann, his grandson, Joseph E Nichols, and his four great grandchildren, Elaisah Nichols, Skye McGann, Tobias Arthur Kraushaar, Phoebe Kraushaar. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Demick. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his son, Daniel "Dan-Man" Nichols, as well as infants, John and Kathleen Nichols. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Francis, William, Harry Jr., Robert, Raymond, and Charles Nichols, as well as his sister, Marion Reed.
