Art Hartung, 88, Hoven, died Friday, February 12, 2021 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Hoven, 10:00 AM, Monday, February 15, 2021 with Father Darin Schmidt, Celebrant. Military rites will be by the Hoven Legion Post. Musicians will be Elizabeth Bengs and Art's daughter-in-law, Kate. Mass server will be Jaxon Hartung; lector will be Art's son, Scott; Eucharistic Minister will be Jerry Brickner; and offertory gift bearers will be Ava Hartung and Rylee Kaup.
Visitation resumes 9:00 Am Monday at the Church.
Arthur Frank Hartung, son of Josephine (Schumacher) and Anton Hartung, was born October 25, 1932 at the farm 3 1/2 miles west of Hoven in Walworth County. He was brought up on the farm, attended St. Anthony's Parochial School and Hoven High School, Class of 1950. Art served his country in the United States Army, being inducted March 5, 1953. Following his honorable discharge on February 4, 1955, he returned to the farm. Art married Loretta Fix at Onaka on June 1, 1959. They settled on Art's home farm west of town. He retired from farming in 1992 and in 1999, he and Loretta moved into Hoven. Other than wintering in Arizona, Art resided in Hoven the rest of his life. Art belonged to St. Anthony's Catholic Church and John J Peters American Legion Post No. 159, Hoven, SD. Although Art did some wood carving, farming was his main interest.

Art is survived by Loretta, his wife of 61 years; one son, Scott (Kate) Hartung of Redfield; three daughters, Deb (Mark) Kindelspire of Faulkton, Jeanie (Curtis) Lagan of Gettysburg, and Kim (Paul) Knecht of Pierre; two sisters, Bernice Harty of Yankton and Evelyn (Bill) Mikuska of Tripp; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Anton, on April 23, 1980; his mother, Josephine, on June 15, 1994; stillborn son, James; four brothers, Ray, Bill, Leo, and Richard; and one sister, Frances Rusza.
Casketbearers will be Brady Hartung and Ed Hartung of Hoven; Carter Knecht of Pierre; Travor Lagan of Casselton, ND; Josh Bluhm of St. Michael, MN; and Art's son, Scott of Redfield.
Services are in care of Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle.
