Arlene Grogan Hughes, age 100, died Monday, November 15, 2021, at Eagle Health and
Rehabilitation in Statesboro.
She was born July 8, 1921, in Cumming, Georgia, and was the youngest of four siblings born to
the late Roscoe Lafayette and Lona Fouts Grogan. Arlene graduated from Dawsonville High
School in Dawsonville, Georgia.
Arlene married Leon Hughes on August 26, 1944, and moved to Atlanta. They resided in Atlanta
until 1972 and then moved to Stone Mountain, Georgia. In 2016 she moved to Statesboro,
Georgia, to be closer to family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, spouse, and son Randy Hughes, as well as her
siblings Vesta Grogan Harris, Loy Grogan, and Lorene Grogan Harris.
Surviving are her daughters, Martha Hughes of Statesboro, GA, and Rita Hughes (Uwe) Quade
of Rohrbach, Germany; grandchildren Sarah Goss (Michael Cardinal) of Marietta, GA, and
Cameron Hughes of Snellville, GA; nieces Peggy (Larry) Anderson of Cumming, GA, Connie
(Ralph) Boroughs of Chattanooga, TN; nephews Colin (Faye) Harris of Stone Mountain, GA,
Jerry Hughes of Cumming, GA, and Jerold Hughes of Dawsonville, GA.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Sawnee View
Memorial Gardens in Cumming, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
