Arlan Lynn Banes passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 5, 2021. He was born January 24, 1939, to George and Gladys Banes in Lafayette, Indiana.
Arlan graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1957. He went on to study and graduate from Bradley University with a degree in Horology.
He was married 60 years to his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Ann Hassett. They were wed on September 24, 1960. Arlan and Phyllis were blessed with three children; Laurie (Robert) Goerke, John (Shelly) Banes, and Leanne (Sean) Kelly.
He was a proud Patriarch and loved his family mightily, especially his grandchildren, Kelly (Nic) Beery, Heather (Scott) Doering, Danielle (Josh) Banes-Foster, Johnny Banes, Kyle and Brook Clodfelter, Kaelin, Katherine, and Conor Kelly; 11 Great-Grandchildren, Landon Goerke, Jackson Doering, Bentley Doering, Corbin Beery, Colton Beery, Cambri Beery, Brody Manis, Mickey Foster, Melanie Foster, Sophia Clodfelter, and Olivia Clodfelter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gladys Banes; his beloved grandparents, John and Ethel Medlock; sister, Rita Garrison; brother-in-law, Vaughn Garrison; and his grandson, Clark Goerke.
Arlan was the owner and operator of Arnel Jewelers in Lafayette Indiana. His store was located right next to Arni's Pizza in Market Square Shopping Center. His Kids LOVED that as it meant lots of their favorite pizza brought home to them! In July of 1973 Arlan and his young family moved to South Bend, IN as he continued his career as Manager, and then Regional Manager for Shifrin Willens Jewelers.
Arlan was an active member of the Lafayette chapter Breakfast Optimist Club. He served as President of the Lafayette chapter from 1968-1969. He enjoyed playing golf and Poker, and Bridge with his many friends. He volunteered as an usher for St. Matthew Cathedral in South Bend for many years. Arlan was an animal lover and was preceded in death by many of his beloved pets and leaves behind his sweet cat Minnie. He was an avid gardener and his tomatoes are legendary amongst his friends and family! Arlan loved to travel, especially taking cruises. The Caribbean were his most frequent ports of call, but Alaska was no stranger to him as well. He participated for several years with Rock Steady Boxing to knock out Parkinson's. In the fall, nothing kept him away from tailgating and Notre Dame football.
The family and Arlan are extremely grateful for the tireless respect and care provided by Heart To Heart Hospice and Firefly Home Care.
