Anthony "Tony" Charles Alejandro, 77, of Boerne, Texas, passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021. He was born in San Antonio to Antonio Alejandro and Emma Marchiori Alejandro on August 27, 1943. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, followed by a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1966, where he was the first Hispanic to graduate.
Following graduation, Tony served two years on the Coast Guard cutter Gresham, including one year of duty in Vietnam with Coast Guard Squadron Three. Throughout his career, he received various awards and honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and Republic of Vietnam decorations. Tony's additional education included post-graduate work in Electronics Engineering at Purdue University, a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lamar University, and a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Louisville. For the better part of a year, he was repeatedly called from Texas to Alaska to help coordinate Coast Guard activities in response to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, and helped draft a report for President Bush. After 31 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard, including 27 years in the Marine Safety Office, Tony retired as Captain in 1993. He continued his career in the civilian sector by working for the Port of Corpus Christi, where he retired in 2016. Tony was a registered Professional Engineer and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was also a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College. Family and friends will remember Tony as a loving husband and father who loved photographing wildflowers, identifying birds in his backyard, and reading books about astronomy, history, physics, calculus, and poetry. He volunteered both his time and money to civic and charitable organizations. Tony's love of Erector sets as a child blossomed into a large collection of LEGO Technic building sets as an adult. In his spare time, Tony enjoyed Impressionist art exhibits, compiling sports statistics, listening to music, and working on his American postage stamp collection that he started in elementary school. Tony is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert James Alejandro. Tony is survived by his wife of 55 years, Olivia Alejandro; daughter Erin Alejandro and son-in-law Nastasi Hancock; daughter Erica Alejandro; niece Terri Alejandro Helus, and nephew Douglas Alejandro.
