Ann Maddox Moore, a long time McAllen resident, passed away on August 3, 2024 at the age of 93 after a lengthy illness. Ann was born in San Antonio, Texas, the youngest child of C.O. Maddox and Ina Fenner Maddox, the younger sibling of C.O. Maddox, Jr. Her family settled in McAllen in 1937, where Ann attended Wilson Elementary School and graduated from McAllen High School (class of 1948). She was a gifted artist, and after high school, continued her studies at the University of Texas Austin where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1952, and moved to New York City to attend the Art Students' League and Traphagen School of Fashion Drawing.
Returning to McAllen after the untimely illness and death of her father and brother, she married and welcomed three children; left behind to cherish her memory are William Loyal Moore, Jr. (Rebecca), John Maddox Moore (Leslie), and Ann Murray Moore. Ann is also survived by four grandchildren: Jonathan Travis Moore, William Chasen Moore, Evan Maddox Crocker, and Courtney Margot Crocker and two stepgrandchildren: Jennifer Launer and Marie Bozalina (Justin, children: Quentin and Jullian). Ann was predeceased by her parents and brother, her ex-husband W.L. "Doc" Moore, and longtime caretaker Aurelia Garrido.
In addition to her own substantive artistic output, she was an exuberant patron and promoter of the visual arts, collecting throughout her life. As President of the Junior League of McAllen in the mid-1960s, she was instrumental in starting the McAllen International Museum (now IMAS). She also lent her colorful style and forward-thinking talents to advisory boards of many organizations, including the University of Texas Fine Arts Council, City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, IMAS, Xochitl Art Institute, and American Craft Museum Collector's Circle. In 2007, Ann was presented the IMAS Legacy award, which included a show of her extensive collections of art, fashion, and design. Subsequently, Ann donated a large collection of Latin American Folk Art to IMAS, which is housed at Quinta Mazatlan in the Ann Maddox Moore Folk Art Room. In 2024, she was honored as a Legendary McAllen Woman by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce.
The Family wishes to thank The Bridges at Edinburg Memory Care Unit, Concord Hospice, and Nora Mirelez for their compassion and care of Ann.
Visitation and Viewing for Ann will be on Friday, August 9, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. at Kreidler Funeral Home, McAllen, Texas.
