Ann Marie Haugen was born to Julius and Gladys (Aadland) Haugen on May 27, 1939 in Britton, SD. She was raised on a farm with her one sister, Joan. As a young girl, she developed a love for animals - especially horses. In the winter, she and Joan would frequently ride to school on a horse drawn sleigh. She attended Webster High School in Webster, SD, graduating with the class of 1957. While attending high school Ann Marie worked as a waitress at Knap's Cafe.
Ann Marie was united in marriage to Charles (Chuck) Johnson on June 14, 1958. They then moved to Vermillion, SD, and she worked as a nurse's aide at the local hospital. After Chuck graduated from University of South Dakota, they moved to Aberdeen where they resided for 54 years and raised three children, Barry, Lori and Penny.
While Ann Marie was busy raising her own children, she also operated her own home daycare business. She was proud of the fact that many of the children she cared for brought their own children to her daycare as well. After 35 years of caring for two generations of families, she retired. Even during the last years of her life, she displayed photos of her beloved daycare children as they held a special place in her heart.
During the summer months, Ann Marie enjoyed camping and bike riding with family and friends. She loved to entertain and was an excellent cook. She was known for her delicious homemade gingersnap cookies, cinnamon rolls, lefsa during Christmas and especially her popcorn balls during Halloween, which enticed many of her former daycare kids to stop by.
She was an active member of the Altar Guild at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.
Ann Marie was a loving Grandmother to Kristen, Sarah, Jesse, Casey, Corey, Noah and Ian and cherished her time with them.
Chuck and Ann Marie spent 61 wonderful years together. Chuck passed away February 28, 2020.
While dementia had stolen so much of her in the past few years, you could still see the amazing Mother and Grandmother in her who loved giving big hugs and being with her family. We will miss her.
Ann Marie is survived by her children, Barry (Sharon) Johnson of Seaside, OR, Lori (Dan) Weber of Glenwood, IA, and Penny (Mike) Glau of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren, Kristen Koehler, Sarah Johnson, Jesse Johnson, Casey Weber, Corey Weber, Noah Glau and Ian Glau; and one sister, Joan Gilbertson of Aberdeen.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.
In lieu of flowers, people wishing to honor Ann Marie's memory can make donations to Dougherty Hospice House.
