Angelita "Angie" Garza went home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by family on January 4, 2025.
Angie was born on July 28, 1943, in Brownsville, Texas. She was the oldest child of Juan and Guadalupe Garcia. Angie is survived by her five children and their spouses: Hector & Nancy Garza, Jr, Melissa L. Solis, Luzella & Danny Martinez, Rick & Roxanne Garza, and Isaul & Lynda Garza. Angie was also blessed with and is survived by her twelve grandchildren, three granddaughters-in-law and five great-grandchildren. Angie is also survived by her three siblings Aurora "Gore" Betancourt, Janie Villanueva, and Marcelo Garcia. Angie was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Hector Garza and her newborn son Hugo Garza. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John "Cookie" Garcia and her parents.
Angie was a 1963 graduate of Parlier High School in Parlier, California. She met Hector the summer of 1959 in California while working in a local fruit packing shed. Hector would migrate to California from Mercedes and as fate would have it their paths crossed. Hector and Angie were married in 1965 and settled in Mercedes. Angie was the best stay-at-home mom until her youngest started school. It was in 1977 when she found herself with extra time and began to volunteer at the local schools in Mercedes and with her church, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Eventually her passion for her faith and helping others blossomed and she was offered the position as Director of Religious Education (DRE) for Our Lady of Mercy. Angie worked as DRE for Our Lady of Mercy for over 25 years where she worshiped, sang and brought others closer to her Catholic Faith. Angie even organized and planned the pilgrimage to Canada with the help of her CCE teachers for the 2002 World Youth Day and papal visit where students from OLM church went to celebrate the faith. Angie's contagious smile gained the love of many and she never spared spreading prayer, love and hugs. After retiring from Our Lady of Mercy, Angie decided to continue her love of helping children and families and opened up Angie's Day Care from her home where countless children were cared for and entrusted with "Grandma Angie." Angie never ceased to worship and continued to volunteer with Our Lady of Mercy whether it was providing baptismal classes or continuing her mission with the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program at Our Lady of Mercy where she aided countless couples to be married by the church. Her constant reminder "to pray" and leave your worries to God will be carried by all those who knew her.
In addition to Angie's faith was her love of family and the Mercedes Tigers. Whether under the Friday Night Lights, gyms, band concerts or pep rallies, Angie's loud cheers were heard and recognized by all! Her boisterous personality will be missed by many.
Honored to be her pallbearers are Hector Garza III, Charles Malcom McVey-Garza, Daniel Martinez III, Christian Lee Martinez, Ruben Betancourt and Malcolm Garcia. Honorary pallbearer is Isaiah Garza.
