Andrew "Gramps" Marshall
Help us celebrate Andrew! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Andrew.
Andrew Marshall left this world to soar the skies on Sunday, January 3, 2021 with his daughter holding his hand. The principles of the Boy Scouts list: trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Add to those steady and unflappable he was just the man you wanted flying your plane but not sitting across the poker table from you.
Andy was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 24, 1920 to Samson and Mary (Thornton) Marshall. He arrived in Boston, MA at the age of 5 and, became a life-long Bostonian. His strong love of his adopted country and an incident involving airplane fuel in his gas tank led Andy to the Army Air Corp in 1942 and a career in the military that lasted 31 years. He retired as Lt. Colonel in the Massachusetts Air National Guard after flying every plane from bi-wing to fighter jet, along the way accruing the most flight time in the history of the Guard. For years he worked at the MBTA and then headed out to his 'real job' at the Guard to fly every day and then again weekends.
While in high school he met 'the prettiest girl in Jamaica Plain' Lillian Harris. They were married for 70 years until her death in 2013. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Charles; son, Richard and his wife, Joyce.
He is survived by his daughter Pamela Meehan (John) of Naples, FL, and his 5 much loved grandchildren: Stephen (Kerri) Marshall and Kristen Marshall both of Walpole, MA and Seth (Clair) Meehan of Medfield, MA, Andrew (Lindsey) Meehan of West Hartford, CT and Sean (Julie) Meehan of Wethersfield, CT. His pride and joy were his great-grandchildren Jackson, Elle and Morgan Marshall and Amelia, Brady, John, Abigail and Lillian Meehan.
He enjoyed his new home at Brookdale North Naples and his many friends both there and at Audubon Country Club over the last 5 years of his life. When his health necessitated more direct help, the ladies from Assisting Hands were there. A special thanks to his core ladies, Angela, Petronilla, Elizabeth, Marlene and Nativida who became so much more than helpers.
Due to Covid restrictions a celebration of Andy's life and burial will occur in Massachusetts some time in the Fall.
In memory of Andy be kind to each person you meet. Say please and thank you over the smallest thing and do it with a smile and a look in their eyes. It was Andy's way and let it be yours.
