It is with great sadness that the family of Amanda Gale (Neal) Akey announces her passing on June 2, 2022 as a result of illness while at Houston Medical Center. Services celebrating her life will be held on Monday, June 6,2022 at 11:00 am at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel. The visitation for family and friends will be one hour prior to the service at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel.
Amanda was born on August 9, 1947 in the mountains of Virginia and she always felt connected to them in a way that drew her back time and again over the course of her life. Upon graduation from high school, she enlisted in the Marine Corps and was proud of her military service as one of the first female marines at Parris Island in Beaufort County, SC. It was during this time she married (Dennis Robert Neale) and she became a mother to Shannon Eileen Neale and Anjanette Marie Neale.
She loved to bowl, was socially active and made many friendships. While working for the Beaufort County Board of Education she met and married Ronald Paul Akey, her devoted husband. Ron reenlisted in the Air Force, partly due to Amanda’s love of travel, and they were stationed in Myrtle Beach when their daughter, Varonika Gale Akey, was born.
They transferred to Mildenhall, England where they lived several years and made more lifelong friends (Beverly and Paul Keeten) as they explored the UK and various parts of Europe. They then were stationed in at Gunter AFB in Montgomery, AL and later Chicopee, MA before retiring at Warner Robins AFB in Georgia where they made a happy life with their many friends, their daughters and their partners/spouses (Brad Roberts and Joe Donnelly) and granddaughter, Kendall Rhiannon Donnelly.
Amanda was a friend to everyone and loved nothing more than hosting gatherings at their home. Her sharp mind, love of history, collecting everything from fleurs-de-lis objects d’art to leather bound books, gift of story and sense of adventure were enjoyed by and shared with thousands of people throughout her lifetime and through social media.
She will be greatly missed by the many lives she touched. Her beloved mountains have called her home one last time
With Honor, Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel & Crematory has been entrusted with arrangements.
