Help us celebrate Alton! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Alton.
Alton Lee Stone died July 19, 2018, four days short of his 102nd birthday, of heart failure. He was born July 23, 1916 in Nash County, NC to George and LouAnnie Stone. He grew up and attended school in Broadway, NC. Alton and his younger brother James joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. They served together in the Pacific Arena and were both Pearl Harbor survivors. After the war, he made a career with the National Weather Service as a meteorologist until his retirement in 1984. He lived in Greensboro during most of that time, raising three children. In 1988, he moved to Quail Hollow Estates in Charlotte, NC to be close to his children and their families. His final two years were in Monroe, first with daughter Alisa and later at Brookdale Union Park Assisted Living.
Alton is survived by his children, Susan Stone, Richard Stone, and Alisa and Steve Hopper; grandchildren, Stuart and Maribeth Charles Hopper, Nina Hopper, Alena Hopper, Zhanna Stone, and Katherine Stone; niece, Betty Stone Massey; and nephew, Curt Stone. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Tressie Peek Stone; and brothers, Wendell Stone and James Stone. Living until this advanced age, he outlived many friends yet is survived by many more.
Alton will be lovingly remembered for his kindness, gentleness and graciousness. He always thought of others first and loved his family with every breath. He continued to make friends until his death. After moving to Brookdale earlier this year, he became a favorite among residents and staff, always sharing a smile or a handshake. He will be dearly missed by all.
Special thanks to family friend, Annemieke Morrison for the care she provided; physician of many years, Dr. Al Hudson; and the staff of Brookdale Union Park.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the donor's charity of choice.
