The family of Althea Kay Simpson is saddened to announce her passing on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at the age of 72. Althea was born in Williamstown, Kentucky on November 21, 1949 to the late Grover Edwin and Lola Valerie Simpson.
After years enjoying her time as a stay-at-home mom, Althea worked for BB&T in Wilson, then went back to school to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree from Barton University, with a double major in English and Art. Always a bookworm, the choice of English as a major wasn't a surprise. Althea was also very creative and crafty, and an extremely gifted potter. After graduating from Barton, Althea worked as a reporter for The Wilson Daily Times, then accepted a position as General Manager for The Laurinburg Exchange where she worked until her retirement.
Althea leaves her three children to cherish her memory: David Cully Wilhelm (Leigh) of Wilson, Robin Wilhelm Davis (Jim) of Wilson, and Adam Jeffrey Wilhelm of Laurinburg. She will also be greatly missed by her six siblings, Barbara Levine (Greg) of Wilson, Grover Simpson (Norma) of Vermilion, OH, Laurel Simpson of Sydney, Australia, Kevin Simpson (Ivan) of San Mateo, CA, Joseph Simpson (Gail) of Toledo, Ohio and Sydney Phillips of Anderson, SC.
In addition, Ms. Simpson leaves five cherished grandchildren, including Davis Strickland, Sarah Bunn, Virginia Batten, George Batten, and Meg Wilhelm, all of Wilson. She had been greatly anticipating the imminent arrival of her first great-grandchild, Beau Davis Strickland, son of Davis Strickland and Morgan Willis. Ms. Simpson is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and even several great-great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering is being planned for Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Wilson Women's Club, 402 Broad Street W. Wilson, NC.
Services entrusted to Richard Boles Funeral Service, Laurinburg, NC.
