Northampton native and noted historian, Allison Lockwood, passed away at the age of 100 on January 13th.
Born in Northampton in 1920, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah (Sharpe) McCrillis.
She graduated from Smith College with a B.A. in English in 1943. She immediately began serving as an Army WAC, working for the Allied cause in Cryptology and related fields.
In 1947 she married Paul Lagomarcino, a member of the Army Air Corps and a navigator aboard a B-52. He later became an attorney.
After a brief time in Washington, they spent several years in Buffalo. In 1961 they moved back to Washington and Allison became an English professor at Montgomery College.
In 1965, the family anglicized their name to Lockwood.
In 1984, the family moved to Northampton and Mr. Lockwood passed away In 1986.
In 1992, Allison married Richard Garvey, editor of the Springfield Republican. Mr. Garvey passed away in 2004.
During her retirement in Northampton, Allison regularly wrote history articles for the Daily Hampshire Gazette. She also wrote history books on topics such as Calvin Coolidge and on her childhood. Perhaps her best-known book is "Touched With Fire", about Northampton's experiences of World War II. Some of her other books of note are "Passionate Pilgrims" and "Finding Paradise", a history of Northampton 1654-1861.
Allison was predeceased by her son Charles in 2012 and by her brother, William McCrillis.
She is survived by her son John of Washington and a cousin, Alison Lucey of Florence, Ma. She will be greatly missed here on Earth, but has undoubtedly already found a perfect place in Heaven.
