Allen Christopher Herbert died on April 16, 2022, at the age of 78 years, while gardening and planting sunflowers at his home in Purcellville, VA.
Allen was born in Queens, NY, on March 22, 1944, the son of the late George Joseph Herbert and Adelaide Preuss. He spent most of his childhood in Morristown, NJ. He graduated from Bayley-Ellard School (NJ) and Merrimack College (MA). His initial work as a civil engineer was with the City of Detroit in 1967. He spent a majority of his career as the municipal engineer for Morris Township in New Jersey.
In 1969, Allen married Susan Mullee. They lived in Denville, NJ for nearly 30 years where they raised their two children - Garrett and Rachel. Allen was actively engaged with the American Diabetes Association and the Boy Scouts of America. In 1997, he and Susan moved to Alexandria, VA where Allen dedicated much of his time to cooking, reading, wood carving, and rowing on the Potomac river. They later moved to Bluemont in 2011 and Purcellville in 2015.
Allen was loved for his calm demeanor, humility, unique wit, and quite confidence.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; son, Garrett of San Jose, CA; his daughter, Rachel Combs of Ashburn, VA; and his grandchildren, Beckett, Japhy, and Temperance. Also surviving are his brothers, David of NJ and Laurence of FL. He was pre-deceased by his parents; his brother, Dennis; and sister, Patricia.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on May 21, 2022, 1 P.M. at St. Bridget of Ireland Catholic Church.
Interment will immediately follow at Cool Spring Natural Cemetery at Holy Cross Abbey. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks those who knew and loved Allen to honor him by doing a kind deed and planting some sunflowers.
