Alice Wainscott (1923-2024) of Duncan passed away at Wilkins Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center on Monday, November 4, 2024. Alice was born on June 30,1923 to Fred and Augusta Walbrick in Geronimo, Oklahoma. Alice was the seventh of the ten Walbrick children. She attended school at Fairview Elementary in Geronimo.
On February 25, 1939, she married Leroy Wainscott. After marriage, they established a home in Lawton, Oklahoma. Together, they had one child, Bobby Leroy Wainscott. Later in life, they moved to Apache, Oklahoma, to be closer to her son, Bobby and his family where she had a huge garden and fruit trees. Not long after the death of her husband, she moved back to Lawton, Oklahoma to be closer to her family. She dwelled the apartment life for many years in Lawton, but later moved to Duncan, Oklahoma in December 2021 to be closer to her granddaughter, Stacy Wainscott McGough, grandson-in-law, James McGough and their children.
She also enjoyed going to senior citizen dances in Cooperton, Oklahoma, and to listen to her brother, Jack, and his band play music. After Leroy's death, she continued to attend these dances, stating "not many men attend, so I just dance with my sister she dances better anyway!"
Alice came from a very hard working family. She worked hard her entire life, she started out a very young age. She started out picking and chopping cotton as a child. She even ran the "binder" during wheat harvest, replacing the lazy gentleman her father had hired to do the job, she went to work at the age of 9 on this task, her father fired him on the spot after seeing that Alice could do the job! She had nine sisters and brothers and loved them all dearly. Each one had the "hard work" ethic instilled in them! Her family meant the world to her, they always gathered for holidays taking turns at each other's houses, while each family continued to grow, it was quite a celebration for the holidays filled with crowds, lots of great food (they were all wonderful cooks) and music!
As she got older, her and sister in law, Neva Walbrick, opened a beauty shop, where they worked for many years and made lots of memories. They loved working together and doing hair for family and friends. Once the shop closed, she began working for Gibson's in Lawton, OK. Alice was very good at her job and took pride in her work, no matter the job.
Alice and Leroy were members of Richard Spur Baptist Church where she taught Vacation Bible School with her sister Millie Cherry. The snacks at VBS were always a hit with these ladies in charge!
Alice started every day by turning on the radio to begin her day. In fact, her enclosed back porch was filled with plants that also adored the music! At the end of the day, the music was turned off and it was time for bed, just like clockwork.
Alice is survived by her granddaughter, Stacy and husband James McGough, of Duncan, OK; great grandchildren, Sarah and Troy Becker of Shawnee, OK, and Emily and Ben Stockton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Sam McGough of Duncan, Oklahoma; great great grandson, Maverick Becker, of Shawnee, OK.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leroy Wainscott; her son Bobby Wainscott; her brothers, Arthur Walbrick, Fred Walbrick, George Walbrick, Paul Walbrick, Albert Walbrick and Jack Walbrick; her sisters, Ida Warner and twin sisters, Lillie Carr and Millie Cherry and, a loving sister-in-law Neva Walbrick.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Wilkins Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center and Comforting Hands Hospice in Duncan, Oklahoma for their kindness and blessings. Wilkins Staff have loved on and cared for her since December 2021.
