Alfredo R. Zuniga, 91, died on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at McAllen Transitional Care Center. He is preceded in death by his wife Adelina L. Zuinga, his parents, Alvino E. Zuniga and Feliciana Zuniga, his daughter Linda Z. Ybarra, his brother Juan Zuniga and sisters Guadalupe Zuniga and Manuela (Meme) Rodriguez.
Alfredo Zuniga is survived by his three children, Alfredo Zuniga Jr., Mario Zuniga, and Gloria Z. Gonzales and son-in-law Arturo Ybarra.
He worked for 40 years with The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation until he retired on June 1991. Mr. Zuniga and his dog Fido were famous for their work in placing brushes inside drainage ditches to help keep them clean. He was also known for his ability to mow the steep sides of the highway underpasses.
He loved working with wood. He made crosses for people to place on their loved ones graves. He created wooden cats with marbles for eyes, roosters, roadrunners, and a little girl with a watering canister to hang on fences. Everyone loved his work carvings.
Visitation will be from 3pm to 9pm with a 7pm rosary on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at De Leon Funeral Home of Pharr. A chapel service will be held at 10am on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at De Leon Funeral Home of Pharr. Burial will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr under the direction of De Leon Funeral Home of Pharr.
