Albert Alter passed away peacefully on March 17, 2022, in Springfield, VA. He was 99 years old. Al was born in Manchester, NH, where he grew up. At age 17, he entered the U.S. Army, which sent him to the Army Special Training Program at Princeton University and then to World War II in Europe as an artillery forward observer through the end of the war. In 2016, he was honored by the Government of France for his service in six major battles of the war. He graduated with a B.S. from Boston University in 1946. That same year, he married Frieda L. Caras (their first date had been ice skating outdoors on a pond), with whom he had one son. Al went on to have a successful career in the clothing manufacturing business, rising to the position of President of Pandora Knitwear in Manchester, NH. In retirement in Florida, his wife and he enjoyed golfing very much. After Frieda's passing, Al moved to Virginia to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law and two of his grandsons. An avid reader (on his iPad) to the end, he enjoyed keeping up to date with current events, writing essays, and also FaceTiming with his family.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Marsha Alter; and by his grandchildren Evan Alter, Ciara and Perry Alter, and Brandon Alter; and his great-grandson Ezra Alter. His biggest smiles in his last few weeks were when he looked at photos of Ezra. Services will be held graveside at Manchester Hebrew Cemetery in New Hampshire at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 24, 2022.
