Funeral services for Alan Clemensen, 85, Brentford, SD, are 11:00am, Friday, May 25, 2018, at Brentford Congregational United Church of Christ, with Pastor Eric Gerber officiating. Burial is at 2:30pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens: military honors by Winters-Peterson American Legion Post 242 of Brentford. Alan died Monday, May 21, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen, SD. Visitation: 4:00-7:00pm, Thursday, with a prayer service at 7:00pm, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street, Aberdeen. Alan Clarence Clemensen was born May 1, 1933, to Samuel and Mary (Shearn) Clemensen in Beotia Township, Spink County, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm in the Conde/Brentford area. As a young man he played baseball and basketball. Music was an important part of his family. He played saxophone and sang in the family band. Alan graduated from Brentford High School in 1951. He then attended South Dakota State University. Alan served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955, where he played alto saxophone with the 291st Army Band. After receiving his honorable discharge, Alan returned to South Dakota and married Lavanda Lenling in October of 1956. They made their home on the family farm and had three children: Roger, Renee and Caron. On September 22, 1978, Alan married Bonnie (Thomas) Borge in Brentford. They made their home on the farm until moving into Brentford in 1991. Alan retired from farming in 2003, and he and Bonnie continued to live in Brentford. Alan was a member of the Brentford Congregational UCC and sang with the men's choir for many years. He and Bonnie enjoyed fishing and they took many fishing trips to the river. They also took a yearly trip, including a road trip to Alaska. Playing cards, especially Whist, was a favorite pastime of his. He also did crossword puzzles every day. Alan was a big Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. He also loved to watch his grandchildren play baseball. Grateful for having shared Alan's life are his wife: Bonnie Clemensen, Brentford; his children: Roger (Michelle) Clemensen, rural Brentford, Renee (Michael) Splittgerber, Eden Prairie, MN, and Caron (Sean) Ihde, Delano, MN; his step-children: Cristy (Steve) Biegler, Aberdeen, Tracy (Kevin) Hanlon, Sioux Falls, SD, and Lea Ann (Mark) Flaagan, West Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Logan (Megan) Clemensen, Shay Clemensen, Mitchell Splittgerber, Alyssa Splittgerber, Andrew Ihde, and Alexander Ihde; step-grandchildren: Matt (Amber) Biegler, Mike (Amber) Biegler, Kyle Hanlon, Tiffany Hanlon, Melissa Hanlon, Kory Hanlon, Tyler Flaagan and Jordan Flaagan; great-granddaughter: Adalynn Clemensen; and step-great-grandchildren: Cannon and Collins Biegler, Porter Biegler, Kendra Bates, James Roemen and Zachariah Hanlon-Bohlen.
