Celsus was born December 29, 1939, in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland, the daughter of Joseph Bergin and Julia Dolan Bergin. After completing her schooling in Ireland, she immigrated to Queens, New York in 1957 and was welcomed by her beloved Uncle and Aunt, Jack and Polly Dolan. While she treasured her Irish roots, she embraced all the opportunities available in her new country and became a U.S. citizen when she eventually moved to Charleston.
On January 13, 1962, she married the love of her life, Richard. After three years in New York, they moved to Charleston, SC and settled in the West Ashley area, where they raised their family and have remained the last fifty-seven years. Celsus had a very gentle, sweet nature and everyone felt welcomed in her home and always left with very full stomachs and hearts. She had the Irish gift of the gab and never met a stranger. Above all else, she treasured her family and was happiest when we were all together under one roof. She was the biggest cheerleader at her children and grandchildren's school and sporting events. Celsus was active in her children's school, helping with teacher lunches and was always willing to do an Irish presentation at school on St Patrick's Day. She was very proud of her Irish step dancing and could be counted on to do a jig at family weddings and even a time or two at Tommy Condon's restaurant. She was an active member of the International Club and met many lifelong friends through this association. Her Catholic faith was extremely important to her and she and Richard were two of the founding members of St Joseph's Catholic Church in West Ashley.
Celsus is survived by her husband of 60 years; four children: Bob Bollinger (Christine), Anne Marie Lutes (John), Barbara Van Notric (Kevin), John Bollinger (Mickie); her eight grandchildren: Erin Bollinger Bickes (Mike), Niall Lutes (Alexis), Chase Bollinger, Conor Lutes (Jenna), Kevin Van Notric Jr, Gracie Bollinger, Collin Bollinger, Bennett Bollinger; her brother, John Bergin (Traute); sisters Kathleen McDonagh and Imelda Cronin (Michael); and sister-in-law Kitty Bergin. She was preceded in death by her brother Vincent (Benny) Bergin and her sisters, Marie Palmer, Eileen Ryan, Sheila Flanagan, Carmel Garvey.
