Marie I. Schmidt Grossnicklaus, 90, of Corvallis passed away peacefully of natural causes Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Samaritan Evergreen Hospice.
Marie was born to Franz August Walter and Maria Marguerite (Heeszel) Schmidt on September 25, 1928, in Corvallis, Oregon. She was the youngest of six children. Growing up in Corvallis she attended: Washington Elementary, Zion Lutheran School and Corvallis High School Class of 1946. She attended Valparaiso University, in Valparaiso, Indiana.
On August 22, 1948, she married Lloyd L. Grossnicklaus. The couple made their home in Corvallis where they raised five children. She was also a second “Mom” to many of her children’s friends.
Like all of the Schmidt’s, she enjoyed flowers, gardening and crafts. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church and cheerfully served where needed. Over the years, she was a member of the Walther League, Aid Association for Lutherans and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Along with her husband, she was custodian of Zion Lutheran Church and School until 1999.
She enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time on the coast. She will be remembered most for her gift of hospitality to those who found themselves a guest in her home.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd Grossnicklaus; her son Collin Grossnicklaus and son-in-law Ryan Bishop.
Marie is survived by daughter, Claudia Bishop, sons Neil Grossnicklaus (Lisa), Mark Grossnicklaus (Traci), and Tim Grossnicklaus (Becky), grandchildren Jason Bishop, Kristin Bishop, Brandon Bishop (Sarah), Charlene Burzynski (Ryen), Jeffrey Grossnicklaus, Michael Grossnicklaus, Madison Grossnicklaus and Sutton Grossnicklaus, and five great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. January 19, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church, 2745 N.W. Harrison Blvd., Corvallis, with reception to follow. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
